Synergy PlanSM Worksheet: Mission Statement

1. Why do you do what you do?

Entrepreneurs: What is so enticing about what you do that you took the time and energy to start your own business?

Employees: Why do you look forward to going to work?

2. What is special or unique about what you do?

Entrepreneurs: Why are your clients glad to hire your company as opposed to your competitors? How would your clients, or prospective clients, describe your business? What benefit(s) do they receive from doing business with you? (This would be similar or the same as the benefits you focus on in marketing materials and sales calls.)

Employees: What do you offer your company that is special or unique? Why are they lucky to employ you? How would your co-workers, including supervisor and those that report to you describe your strengths? How would they describe why they enjoy working with you?

3. Action words that describe your mission. Circle those that have potential to describe your mission, then elaborate on the concepts they represent to you.

accomplish
alleviate
build
connect
educate
enlighten
inspire
generate
organize
reform
safeguard
serve

5. How does what you do impact others? The community? People that use your product or service? Targeted groups?
Who is affected by your mission:

children
corporate employees
disabled
infants
entrepreneurs
neighbors
parents
pets/service animals
seniors
small business owners
teachers
teens

6. Now, draft a sentence or two that describes what you'll do and who will be affected by your work. Start with phrases, then try to string them together into a sentence that your mother, high school teacher, or your neighbor would understand and feel like you have a cause you believe in.

Examples of Mission Statements:

Freelance Writer: "To use my writing abilities to highlight businesses that treat employees well and use integrity in their interactions with clients."

Tutor: "To teach kids (and their parents) that learning is fun, and prepare them for a lifetime of loving to learn."

My mission statement:
To help others find their true path in life (including family life) and work, and to identify and overcome the obstacles on my true path.
